Expansion One

When it came to expansion one i needed to use an artwork i had done recently, outside of uni due to having a year break. So i chose a painting that i felt wasn't quite good enough for me to show to anyone or even title it but i felt the concept was still fertile enough to make another work. The concept was about playing on the idea of art being about making money and purely that, so on my painting i played with the idea of the patterns in bank notes and painted them in many layers, with a tag line that said "thanks for playing" with a genderless head. The painting was littered with many mistakes and so remains untitled.

This turned into the idea of making literal coins, solid, metal coins, with two sides, grooves in the side, something tactile with weight that you could hold and touch, something that conveyed worth. The planning for this was a bit difficult, unsure on how to actually make coins i thought i would need to make a press. but though discussing this with mike and Wayne in the workshop we discovered that it would be easier to first make a master out of plasticine, then dangle that mold in silicone, then pour molten metal into the mold. The result was exactly what i expected, getting four coins all up, all of them were identical, with the same tactility and same weight.
