Everyday Actions is an audio installation artwork which runs for 3 minutes and 10 seconds. The artwork is composed mainly of the sounds of cleaning dishes, washing clothes and wringing clothes. The artwork also features excerpts from a Marshall McLuhan talk which shifts from the left to the right speaker throughout the artwork and also features some ambient drones which increase in volume as the work proceeds. The artwork seeks to outline how simple everyday tasks can be used to produce art, the placement of the stereo speakers 3 meters apart allows for the soundscape to be interactive with the viewer, where as the closer the listener gets to either speaker the more prominent a particular sound will be, with the sound of dishes being cleaned on the left, washing clothes on the right and wringing clothes in the centre.
The talk by Marshall McLuhan sits at a moderately low level for most of the work only reaching true audibility at 1 minute 10 seconds. The artwork aims to show that simple non-art processes are able to be used to construct artworks and that art does not require you to visualise an object for it to be interpreted, the tactility of the sounds produced by the act of washing up should be enough to get the person listening to imagine dishes being washed. The soundscape loses much of its tactility with the addition of the ambient drone which ends up the dominant sound and the McLuhan talk, which can still be heard throughout the soundscape. Both the ambient drone and the talk draw the attention of the listener away from the focal sounds of washing up and intentionally so, as both of these additions aim to distract the listener from the act of washing up.
When it came to Repeat Replay I took it on two fronts, both the pencil on the paper and the making sound and combined them in a video, the main idea behind it was to combine what most other people were doing and creating a sound work, this workshop two homework task seems to consist mostly of sound works.
